Only 18 months
ago Alemayehu lived in poorest conditions in a city called Bahir
Dar on the shores of Lake Tana in Northern
Ethiopia.
Alemayehu still
remembers those days very well when food was never enough and
he was playing with his friends using "plastics and
socks" to make a football. After finishing school he left
Bahir Dar and moved to Addis Ababa, believing that the big city
would give him greater opportunities for his future. He found work
as a metal welder. But the salary was simply not enough to survive
and his dreams of a better life got shattered. He had to move back
to his hometown, not sure what to try next in order to escape
poverty.
But then, from one day to another,
Alemayehus life changed. He was one of the first ones to hear about
Alchemy World and its programme to train young Ethiopians from
very poor backgrounds in English, IT and business - and Alemayehu
jumped on the opportunity. "Knowledge and skills" is the terms he
used later to describe the two main things he gained during
the course - and the words "Why not?". Many times Alemayehu
underlined that this is one of the most important lessons he
learned in the past year: To believe firmly that everything is
possible, even in a developing country like
Ethiopia. "Furthermore I will have my own business rather than
being an employee", he explained a few months after starting the
Alchemy World programme. Alemayehu added that the time had
come to prepare himself for the big dream of a better
life.
And here he is,
Alemayehu Berhanie, 18 months later. Again in Addis Ababa, but
this time with a clear goal and lots of support from Alchemy
World and his fellow students - who all became friends for a
lifetime during the course. Here he is, in his brandnew suit and
in elegant shoes, celebrating his bright future in the
beautiful Sheraton Hotel of Etiopia's effervescent capital
together with his classmates Askal and
Belaynesh.
Alemayehu came to
Addis Ababa in July 2008 to enter the international business
world and establish contacts with possible future customers. A
few weeks earlier he took on a short consultant job for the Bahir
Dar University, owning enough money to buy himself business
clothes and through this the self-confidence for the meetings
with his future customers.
He is about to start a
distribution company for specialised software, concentrating on
hotel booking systems. It's an excellent choice because he
can not only count on the constantly growing Ethiopian tourism
market but also on partnerships with a big number of hotels
in other East African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. In a
few months time Alemayehus dream of a successful future will
become reality.
This is the story of
Alemayehu Brehanie. To be continued...
